Denim Day, organized by Peace Over Violence, is an annual campaign encouraging people to wear jeans as a visible message against sexual violence. This year, it falls on April 24th, 2024. Let’s delve deeper into the significance of Denim Day and how it connects to the work we do at RCDS.
Denim Day: A Story of Strength and Support
Denim Day has a powerful origin story. In 1992, a young woman in Italy was brutally raped. The perpetrator’s conviction was overturned due to a deeply offensive justification – the tightness of her jeans somehow implied consent. In response, the women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans in protest, sparking a global movement.
Why Denim Day Matters at RCDS
Sexual violence can affect anyone, regardless of background or ability. Denim Day allows us to stand in solidarity with survivors and challenge the harmful myths surrounding sexual assault. Here’s how it connects to our core services:
- Advocacy: We fight for the rights and safety of people with disabilities. Denim Day is a powerful advocacy tool, raising awareness and demanding change.
- Independent Living: Sexual assault can impact a person’s sense of security and independence. Denim Day reinforces the message that survivors are not alone and can reclaim their lives.
