April: A Month of Awareness & Action in Brevard County

Here at the Resource Center for Disability Solutions (RCDS), we’re committed to building a more inclusive and supportive community in Brevard County. April offers a unique opportunity to raise awareness for three critical issues: child abuse prevention, sexual assault awareness, and autism acceptance.

1. National Child Abuse Prevention Month (April):

According to the CDC, in 2022, an estimated 1 in 7 children in the United States experienced child abuse or neglect.

“The Florida Department of Health in Brevard County (DOH-Brevard) is proud to join the state in recognizing April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Pinwheels are the national symbol for child abuse prevention and serve as a reminder of the safe and nurturing environment desired for every child. Pinwheels for Prevention, coordinated by Prevent Child Abuse (PCA) FloridaOunce of Prevention Fund of Florida and the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF), is Florida’s statewide campaign that raises awareness of child abuse prevention.”

2. Sexual Assault Awareness Month (April):

Statistics are staggering. According to RAINN, 1 in 6 women and 1 in 35 men will experience sexual violence over their lifetime.

How to Help:

  1. Share the National Sexual Assault Hotline: 800.656.HOPE or visit RAINN: https://www.rainn.org to let survivors know they’re not alone.
  2. Raise awareness by learning more about sexual violence and resources available.
  3. Consider signing a petition to end sexual violence: RAINN’s SAAM Petition: https://rainn.org/SAAPMpetition

3. Autism Acceptance Month (April):

The Autism Society estimates that 1 in 44 children in the US are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
RCDS is committed to creating a safe and inclusive space for autistic individuals. We believe in respecting the rights and humanity of all people on the spectrum.
Together, we can make a difference. Let’s learn, support, and advocate for a more understanding and compassionate Brevard County.
