Breaking the Barriers: Supporting Survivors of Domestic Violence with Disabilities

Breaking the Barriers: Supporting Survivors of Domestic Violence with Disabilities

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) and Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). These two observances are an opportunity to raise awareness of the challenges faced by people with disabilities and survivors of domestic violence and to advocate for their inclusion and well-being in the workplace and community.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month

NDEAM is a time to celebrate the contributions of workers with disabilities and to promote equal opportunity employment for people with disabilities. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 21.3% of people with disabilities are employed, compared to 65.4% of people without disabilities. This is a significant gap that we need to work to close.

At the Resource Center for Disability Solutions (RCDS), we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to work and contribute to their community. Get the answers to all of your frequently asked questions about employment and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by checking out the Employment Resource Hub.

National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

NDVAM is a time to raise awareness of the issue of domestic violence and to support survivors of domestic violence. Domestic violence is a serious problem that affects people of all ages, races, genders, and income levels. In Florida, one in three women and one in four men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime.

RCDS is committed to supporting survivors of domestic violence. We offer a variety of services to survivors, including:

  • Support Groups
  • Advocacy
  • Referral Assistance
  • Resume Writing
  • Interview Guidance

We also work to raise awareness of the issue of domestic violence and to promote prevention efforts and events.
